2027 Presidency: I will Push the Agenda When the Time is Right- Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has affirmed his qualification to contest for the presidency in 2027, though he insists that he will address the matter in due course. Speaking with reporters during a visit to Fashola Farm in Oyo town on Friday, Makinde dismissed the ongoing speculation about his political future, stating that he is capable of making his own decisions and will do so publicly when the time is right.

According to The Punch, Makinde clarified that hosting the recent PDP reporters\' retreat had no connection to any personal political ambition. He emphasized, \"I’m old enough. If I want to do something, I will come out and say, this is what I want to do. No speculation, nobody can push my agenda. I will push my agenda when the time comes.\"

Reflecting on his political journey, the governor recalled overcoming significant challenges, including two unsuccessful bids for the Senate, before being elected governor in 2019, thanks to the support of the people of Oyo State. He highlighted how he ran without backing from political godfathers or financial sponsors, stating, \"The people of Oyo State decided they wanted to give this opportunity to an outsider.\"

Makinde acknowledged the skepticism he faced prior to his election, as many questioned his lack of political experience. \"They asked, ‘Has he been a councillor? No. Has he been to the House of Representatives? No. What about the Senate?’ I tried twice but was rejected,\" he said. Nevertheless, he relied on his success in business and presented a clear vision for the state\'s development, outlining his \"Roadmap to Accelerated Development of Oyo State, 2019-2023,\" which the people embraced.

Makinde also cautioned Nigerians against allowing the country to devolve into a one-party system, emphasizing the importance of providing opportunities for other political talents to emerge. \"Nigeria must not slide into a one-party state so that others will have the opportunity to showcase their talents,\" he warned.
