Labour Strike: Flights Disrupted, Passengers Stranded At Ibadan Airport, Other States

03 June

Reported by Ayooluwa Afolabi

Passengers heading to Lagos and Abuja were left stranded at Ibadan Airport as workers forcefully shut down activities on Monday in strict compliance with the Organized Labour directives.

On Sunday, The Organized Labour Congress directed members of the affiliates union to embark on an indefinite industrial action to press home the demand for a wage increase.

According to Nigerian Tribune, passengers were barred from accessing the Airport from the Alakia end while other gates leading to the Airport were also locked.

All the offices at the Airport have been shut to passengers while the Airport shuttles are on holiday.

In other parts of the country, Organized Labour has also shut down all entry points of aviation agencies at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

This action has, however, affected flight operations at the nation’s busiest airport as airlines and passengers were left stranded at the airport entrances.

This is coming barely 24 hours after the Aviation unions directed its members to withdraw services across airports in Nigeria.

The unions decided this after an emergency meeting held on Sunday.
