Petrol Marketers Import 123m Litres, Continue Talks with Dangote

21 October

Reported by Ibadan Media

At least four vessels carrying imported Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, arrived at seaports along Nigeria’s borders between Friday, October 18, and Sunday, October 20.

A document obtained from the Nigerian Port Authority on Sunday revealed that approximately 123.4 million litres of petrol were offloaded at two seaports to boost fuel supply across the country.

This development aligns with an earlier exclusive report by The PUNCH, which indicated that oil dealers planned to import petrol to supplement supply from the $20 billion Dangote Petroleum Refinery. The dealers had stated that the refinery’s current output, around 10 million litres of petrol per day, was insufficient to meet local demand, compared to the 25 million litres it had initially promised.

In September, the source also reported that importation of about 141 million litres of PMS due to a hike in the pump price of petrol produced by the Dangote Refinery and distributed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). Oil marketers attributed the imports to the government\'s full deregulation of the downstream oil sector, which allowed more flexibility in PMS imports.

An analysis of the document showed that the recent shipments arrived at Lagos\' Apapa Port and the Calabar Port in Cross River State. However, it was not confirmed whether the vessels belonged to NNPCL or independent oil marketers.

The first shipment, carrying 35,000 metric tonnes of PMS, was allocated to West African Port Services and arrived at the ASPM jetty on Friday, October 18, at 10:13 am, The Punch reported.
