Be Ready To Make Impact in Your Host Community – Makinde Urges Oyo Corpers

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde on Wednesday, urged corps members posted to the state for their one-year mandatory service to the nation to be ready to make impact in their host community throughout their one-year service year by embarking on project that will add more values to their lives.

The Governor stated this at the closing ceremony and passing out parade of 2024 Batch A, stream ‘1’ Corps members held at the permanent orientation camp in Iseyin, Oyo State.

Makinde who was represented by the Commissioner of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Wasilat Adegoke, charged the Corps members to be good ambassadors of the scheme and also their parents.

He said, “As you are moving into the nooks and crannies of Oyo State, you should be ready to make your impact felt in your host communities by embarking on projects that would add value to their lives. Endeavour to leave a legacy in your various host communities by rendering selfless service to the people.”

He also urged the corps member to; “Please shun all forms of anti-social behaviour and fraudulent activities. The end of such things is regret and destruction. Allow your parents to reap what they have invested in you and be a source of joy to them.”

The Governor encouraged the Corps members to be law-abiding, diligent, and dedicated in the discharge of their duties, while admonishing them to strive to always make an impact in their host communities.

Furthermore, Makinde called on the Corps members to support and join hands with the state government in the task of building a stronger, more united, peaceful, and democratic nation.

Additionally, he charged employers of corps members in the state to support them to contribute to the nation building.

Makinde noted that the corps members were full of ideas and talents which the nation needed to upturn its woe, hence, the role of corps employers to mentor and guide them positively.

In his address, the NYSC Oyo State Coordinator, Mr Odoba Oche, reiterated the welfare of the corps members, which he disclosed as the top priority of the scheme.

He said, “The welfare of Corps members is of utmost importance to us. We are therefore appealing that employers provide them with basic needs such as accommodation and transportation, or an allowance in lieu. I equally want to make a case for corpers lodges in all the local government councils, as this will assist the Corps members to settle down on time.

Odoba also implored corps members to add value to their certificate by embarking on acquiring more skills for self-development.

He charged the Local Government Authorities to seize the opportunity provided by the scheme through the Community Development Programme by sponsoring projects identified by corps members so that host communities could derive maximum benefits from what they have to offer.

On his part, the Chairman of the Iseyin Local Government, Hon Mufutau Abilawon, has promised to assist the Corps members in the different communities they find themselves in.

A total of 1,737 Corps members from Oyo State participated in the orientation exercise.
